Title: Never Again?

I started this painting after spending time thrifting at the DHS bins. Staring at piles of clothes and shoes that felt more like memories than objects. I thought of the haunting images of Auschwitz’s pile of shoes and the red shoe.

Watching ice attack the people online, have parallels and have visual patterns of genocide. Hateful people try to make a group of people disappear, without realizing they will never remove culture and identities. People commit these atrocities and try to forget it. Objects don’t let you forget the past.

After I learned about the current horror that is Alligator Alcatraz in Florida, I added the two alligators, hate and violence never really disappear. I painted us through the things we leave behind.
